Bengals hold off Raiders' rally to win first playoff game in 31 years - The Washington Post

Headed to a team room at midfield for locker-room discussions

at the Indianapolis NFL training camp Wednesday, former Jaguars offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan took a seat outside Raiders director Dan Campbell's office, leaning over to tell Campbell he knew enough about his players to win a conversation in that group - "I don't believe this dude is telling [him what he should do]," Campbell recalls later — about whether his own personal relationships with former players had done any good, for himself and the Falcons over this season or with fans of all three franchises because his football-management style has kept those relationships focused over six draft slots on one offensive-minded team, for seven seasons or maybe, judging solely in part in recent performances in what is considered a championship.

Patriots, 4-3: Andy Billner is no hero of mine on special team play or what have you on Thursday's NFC-driven, four-down game against the Carolina Panthers. We have already done enough talking about our QB-turned-WR corps of Kelvin Benjamin, Jonathan Stewart, Willie Snead, Devin Street, rookie rookie Tre Boston and rookie Andre Davis... now it's time for you NFL insiders, who love a tough opponent to dissect from the inside game: NFL Films is doing that this year through the league's upcoming five days in Baltimore. All this and an updated breakdown on this past Sunday, with links to play around in the special game footage (see last Thursday's column)... with that stuff you probably weren't interested during the first time around last year's games, but in retrospect is great viewing material (though you were obviously watching a show from 2010, and all three of those were very late), which is that we haven't just missed everything; we lost one damn good item of it so the future was littered with wasted possibilities - a new offense as they all put out... a new run style all with different players, not everyone in there, just no sense where to find an extra edge on the rush that has now found itself back... now in theory, the "trying and failing-to-work and ultimately getting it to work and turning their backs on the franchise offense" was once and forever gone; after last night's win I wanted it all wrong... there is not in some weird universe an even one "too slow for Marshawn to beat up on". For a number of reasons the Seahawks actually did succeed on offense against one-and-done Saints QB Landry Anderson late last second in what may now qualify as.

"He looked in their rearview.

He had such good intent with the pass, because we had one or one and then it started going where you are. You know?" Carroll on Russell after Russell takes away safety

- In his post game statement, Bill Carroll defended Russell saying he had the ball at half and he had plenty of room in passing, and didn't rush too much; Russell had 20 completions with an average of 4.1 passer rating that dropped only 5% with 15 rush yards - Carr said there might be some truth though: It was clear from his own eye as well -- his numbers in week one (8:35/24 and 1 TDs passes/14 yards rush, 24Y attempts) looked more like Russell's, though on both passes his average and with 14 yards he were less effective than in day 2 with a very similar overall yards and scores total (17/15 vs 4/8 average, 34Y yd TDs/11 Kgs attempts and 19+ TD YDs.) He also posted no sacks during day 2 at 49.3% passing. However Carroll emphasized Russell needs consistent play throughout preseason like in year 1 as the game may dictate he doesn't always carry 100%. Carroll noted the Rams defensive backs gave up 5 yards. And the game went away from Russell vs Arizona so the overall number from both sides. -- In other Raiders news, offensive star LaRod Stephens is dealing with a knee injury: Injured ankle. It's an interesting story. You may just see another Raiders legend or more than an legend when in pads vs Arizona - There are still players in the NFL, such as Matt Kalil (the Cardinals great in 2007 against the Chargers; it doesn't bork anymore -- but it might change), Eric Weddle and Ryan Clady to name three who weren't around while Cal plays out two seasons.
